Biography
Charles is a 27-year-old composer from Quebec’s Estrie region, deeply influenced by his experience as a multi-instrumentalist. Until the end of his classical piano studies at Cégep de Sherbrooke, he also maintained daily practice in classical voice, tuba, and percussion, while learning the fundamentals of composition.
This versatility led him to perform as a tubist with the 7th Regiment Drum and Bugle Corps, a U.S.-based marching ensemble, at Lucas Oil Stadium, home of the Indianapolis Colts of the NFL.
Charles continued his musical training at the Université de Sherbrooke, where he refined his skills in orchestration and composition under the mentorship of Benoit Groulx, Maxime Goulet, Robert-Marcel Lepage, and Catherine Major. He also had the opportunity to record his music with musicians from the Sherbrooke Symphony Orchestra, conducted by Maestro Marc David and Maestro Stéphane Laforest.
Since completing his bachelor’s degree in film music composition in 2022, he has expanded his professional activities by teaching piano, working occasionally as a research assistant in musicology, and pursuing organ studies.
In 2023, he collaborated with the Orchestre de la Francophonie on the creation of his work Deux petits poèmes symphoniques. In 2024, his most recent symphonic work, Fragments, was commissioned and premiered by the Orchestre de la Francophonie at Place des Arts in Montreal, under the direction of Simon Rivard.
Inspired by Maurice Ravel, Philip Glass, and Arvo Pärt, Charles composes in an introspective style, seeking to evoke in listeners a sense of both movement and stillness.
